FAQ

Questions about your I-94 history

What is the I-94 travel history?

It’s CBP’s record of your arrivals to and departures from the United States for the past 10 years. You can download it free from i94.cbp.dhs.gov.

How do I download my I-94 travel history PDF?

Open CBP’s travel history page, enter your passport details, then save the results page as a PDF with your browser’s print option.

Is my travel data uploaded or stored anywhere?

No. The PDF is read inside your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers, and closing the tab clears it.

How are days in the U.S. counted?

Each stay runs from the arrival date to the departure date, and both days count as days in the U.S., the same way USCIS and the IRS count partial days.

How does the Substantial Presence Test work?

You’re generally a U.S. tax resident if you were present at least 31 days this year and 183 days over three years, counting all days this year, one-third of last year and one-sixth of the year before. Students, teachers and some other visa holders may be exempt.

Does a long trip abroad affect my green card or citizenship?

A trip over 6 months may break continuous residence for naturalization, and a trip of 1 year or more breaks it unless you have an approved Form N-470. The report flags both.

What is H-1B recapture?

Days spent outside the U.S. while in H-1B or L-1 status don’t count toward the 6-year limit and can be added back. The report counts your days abroad since your H-1B start date for your attorney to confirm.

Why do some records say “Unavailable”?

CBP sometimes doesn’t record a port, often at land borders. We still pair the dates and show the port as unknown. Check those entries against your passport stamps.

What can I do with the CSV export?

Open it in Excel or Google Sheets, copy trips into Form N-400 or DS-160, or send it to your attorney or CPA.
